Paying Tribute to Martyrs in Dien Bien: Thuyloi University’s Journey of Patriotic Education

In commemoration of the 79th Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (July 27, 1947 – July 27, 2026), within the framework of a working visit to Dien Bien province, a delegation from Thuyloi University, led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet, Vice President of the University, paid a solemn tribute to the heroic martyrs at the A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Martyrs’ Temple on A1 Hill. This activity holds profound political and traditional educational significance, embodying the “when drinking water, remember its source” moral principle upheld by generations of the University’s officials and lecturers.

In a solemn and respectful atmosphere, members of the delegation observed a minute of silence and offered incense, expressing their deep gratitude to the heroic martyrs who fought and sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence and freedom, contributing to the Dien Bien Phu Victory that was “resplendent in five continents and earth-shaking.” The event served as an occasion for each official and lecturer of the University to reflect on the nation’s glorious revolutionary tradition, while fostering patriotism, the “when drinking water, remember its source” principle, and the responsibilities of the current generation toward the cause of national construction and defense.

The A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery, built in 1958 at the foot of the historic A1 Hill, is one of the most prominent national martyrs’ cemeteries in the country. Spanning over 3 hectares, it is the final resting place of 644 officers and soldiers who heroically sacrificed their lives during the 1954 Dien Bien Phu Campaign, most of whom remain unidentified. Within the cemetery grounds lie the graves of four Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces: To Vinh Dien, Phan Dinh Giot, Be Van Dan, and Tran Can. This site is not only a place to pay tribute to those who laid down their lives for the Fatherland but also a “red address” for revolutionary tradition education, inspiring national pride and the aspiration of today’s generations.

Inaugurated on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory, the Martyrs’ Temple on A1 Hill is a significant structure dedicated to honoring the martyrs who perished in the historic 1954 campaign, while contributing to the education of patriotic traditions for future generations.

The tribute visit to the A1 National Martyrs’ Cemetery and the Martyrs’ Temple on A1 Hill was not only a meaningful act of gratitude but also a vivid practical lesson on patriotism, appreciation, and civic responsibility. It also provided an opportunity for every official and lecturer at Thuyloi University to take further pride in the national history and to continue spreading the spirit of dedication, innovation, and community service.
